Equestria, a small business launched by Elizabeth Mohr in 2005, has won the Small Business category of the Midrand Business of the Year Awards 2006. This award automatically qualifies the company as a semi-finalist in the Old Mutual National Business of the Year Competition for 2007.
The honour was bestowed during a gala event at Gallagher Estate on November 8.
Equestria organises the annual Christmas equestrian family spectacular, now in its second year. The event features a variety of acts that showcase a number of different equestrian and other sports - from Shetland pony and endurance riding to national showjumping.
“This award is the first formal recognition of our success – and I am delighted it comes from my home town,” says Mohr, a resident of Midrand for the past 22 years.
“It is wonderful to receive credit for the hard work involved in being an entrepreneur. It is sometimes difficult to retain focus as well as vision, and this award proves that we’re on the right track.”
The Midrand Chamber of Commerce & Industry takes several business aspects into consideration when making its awards, including financial performance, leadership style, staff policies, social responsibility and employment equity.
The Chamber, established 24 years ago, is dedicated to promoting and protecting the interests of business in Midrand and surrounds.
“We consider the Midrand Business of the Year Awards to be a vital platform to acknowledge, award and reward those companies who have clearly achieved good business planning, sound financial success and or projection as well as unique ability in gaining a competitive advantage with market oriented strategic philosophies, balanced with strong employee benefits,” says Dee Reuvers, president of the Midrand Chamber of Commerce &Industry.
“We applaud all the finalists and winners in each category and look forward to rewarding more contestants for 2007.”
The Midrand Business of the Year Awards have been running for five years challenging small, medium and large companies to compete and network in an ambience of good business and close community.
Equestria 2006 takes place from 8 to 10 December at the Coca-Cola Dome at Northgate. It has all the makings of a spectacular Christmas show, with exciting displays, entertaining animal acts and an array of speed as well as showjumping events of international standard.
25 of the country’s top riders and their horses will also compete for the national Equestria Indoor Showjumping Championship title and there is also a retail exhibition.
